Near Death Experience (NDE) accounts have multiplied as the Internet and social media have made it easier to access them. They are often written off as some sort of by-product of the body shutting down as death approaches, or they’re given some similar theoretical dismissal.
But many of them contain detail and phenomena that belie this dismissiveness. Insisting on rigorous examination and proof is good science. But having a closed mind to the possibility that there are other dimensions of consciousness that transcend our current abilities to see and sense and measure is not such good science. What lies beyond time and space and matter and our physical senses?
To use a legal metaphor, we require proof “beyond a reasonable doubt” if someone has been accused of a crime. However, in other non-criminal cases, judges and juries make important decisions that affect people’s lives based on “a preponderance of the evidence.” Sometimes lawyers describe this by saying that the evidence in favor of a particular claim outweighs the evidence against it by something more than 50%.
Which leads to this suggestion: Consider the following account of an NDE, and others you can find on many websites if you have an interest, using the “preponderance of the evidence” standard. There are many people, including many scientists, who have either concluded that these experiences are “objectively real” or that there is enough evidence they are “real” to not be so dismissive. Just sayin’.
